In this regard, greater emphasis is placed on ensuring ‘long duration’ electricity storage systems – systems that have the capacity to deliver electricity throughout at least a four-hour period – are integrated into Ireland’s electricity grid.
In line with Action #6, EirGrid, in conjunction with the Regulatory Authority, are developing a procurement mechanism for long-duration electricity storage, through their Long Duration Energy Storage (LDES) product. The LDES product is in its initial stages with 2 separate public consultations expected in 2025 and 2026.
