We develop an algorithm for stand-alone residential BESS cost as a function of power and energy storage capacity using the NREL bottom-up residential BESS cost model (Ramasamy et al.,
In 2025, you''re looking at an average cost of about $152 per kilowatt-hour (kWh) for lithium-ion battery packs, which represents a 7% increase since 2021. Energy storage systems (ESS) for four-hour durations exceed $300/kWh, marking the
Chile Chile passed an energy storage and electromobility bill in late 2022, making stand-alone storage projects profitable for operators. However, the market is still awaiting new rules regarding a capacity payment for storage

For the 2024 cost of 4-hour storage, we adapted and applied the 2024 Photovoltaic (PV) System Cost Model (PVSCM) framework published by the Solar Energy Technologies Office (SETO)
The U.S. Department of Energy''s (DOE) Energy Storage Grand Challenge is a comprehensive program that seeks to accelerate the development, commercialization, and utilization of next-generation energy storage
Meanwhile, the costs of pumped hydro storage are expected to remain relatively stable in the coming years, maintaining its position as the cheapest form – in terms of $/kWh –
The U.S. Department of Energy''s solar office and its national laboratory partners analyze cost data for U.S. solar photovoltaic systems to develop cost benchmarks to measure progress towards goals and guide research and development
Therefore, to account for storage costs as a function of storage duration, we apply the BNEF battery cost reduction projections to the energy (battery) portion of the 4-hour storage and use
The battery storage technologies do not calculate levelized cost of energy (LCOE) or levelized cost of storage (LCOS) and so do not use financial assumptions. Therefore, all parameters are the same for the research and development
Here and throughout this presentation, unless otherwise indicated, analysis assumes a capital structure consisting of 20% debt at an 8% interest rate and 80% equity at a 12% cost of equity.
Since installing the country''''s first commercial energy storage unit back in September 2014, we have connected storage capacity totalling 150MW across 33 sites, with a further 250MW of
While the energy storage market continues to rapidly expand, fueled by record-low battery costs and robust policy support, challenges still loom on the horizon—tariffs, shifting tax incentives, and supply chain uncertainties
The Chilean government has enabled standalone storage systems and created favorable rules for remuneration, energy arbitrage, and grid services. Chile''s storage market
Lazard''s 2025 analysis found LCOS for a 100MW utility-scale standalone BESS with 2-hour duration to range between US$129/MWh and US$277, and for a 4-hour duration 100MW
Battery Energy Storage Overview This Battery Energy Storage Overview is a joint publication by the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association, National Rural Utilities Cooperative
The battery storage technologies do not calculate levelized cost of energy (LCOE) or levelized cost of storage (LCOS) and so do not use financial assumptions. Therefore, all parameters are
This work incorporates base year battery costs and breakdown from the report (Ramasamy et al., 2021) that works from a bottom-up cost model. The bottom-up battery energy storage systems (BESS) model accounts for major

Projected Utility-Scale BESS Costs: Future cost projections for utility-scale BESS are based on a synthesis of cost projections for 4-hour duration systems as described by (Cole and Karmakar, 2023). The share of energy and power
Therefore, to account for storage costs as a function of storage duration, we apply the BNEF battery cost reduction projections to the energy (battery) portion of the 4-hour storage and use the Cole and Frazier summary for the remaining
To separate the total cost into energy and power components, we used the bottom-up cost model to calculate the cost of a storage system with durations ranging from one hour to ten hours,
Base year costs for utility-scale battery energy storage systems (BESSs) are based on a bottom-up cost model using the data and methodology for utility-scale BESS in (Ramasamy et al., 2023). The bottom-up BESS model accounts for major components, including the LIB pack, the inverter, and the balance of system (BOS) needed for the installation.
The lower costs persist through 2050 because of that lower starting point. Table 2. Values from Figure 3 and Figure 4, which show the normalized and absolute storage costs over time. Storage costs are overnight capital costs for a complete 4-hour battery system. Figure 9.
By definition, the projections follow the same trajectories as the normalized cost values. Storage costs are $147/kWh, $234/kWh, and $339/kWh in 2035 and $108/kWh, $178/kWh, and $307/kWh in 2050. Costs for each year and each trajectory are included in the Appendix, including costs for years after 2050. Figure 4.
The Storage Futures Study report (Augustine and Blair, 2021) indicates NREL, BloombergNEF (BNEF), and others anticipate the growth of the overall battery industry—across the consumer electronics sector, the transportation sector, and the electric utility sector—will lead to cost reductions in the long term.
Small-scale lithium-ion residential battery systems in the German market suggest that between 2014 and 2020, battery energy storage systems (BESS) prices fell by 71%, to USD 776/kWh.
With the falling costs of solar PV and wind power technologies, the focus is increasingly moving to the next stage of the energy transition and an energy systems approach, where energy storage can help integrate higher shares of solar and wind power.
