The projects have been developed by TotalEnergies affiliate Kyon Energy. Most will utilise next-generation batteries from another TotalEnergies affiliate, Saft.
The region could soon acquire a new significance, however: it boasts considerable resources of lithium, a chemical element used in the production of batteries. The German company Vulcan Energy is preparing to mine this natural resource – in one of a whole series of projects that the European Union has identified as strategically important.
In July 2024, the company launched a 100MW/200 megawatt hours (MWh) battery storage project in Dahlem, in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia, with an investment of more than €75m – the first approved project from Kyon Energy’s pipeline since its acquisition.
That’s why the list includes above all projects that will secure the raw materials needed to make batteries: 22 projects concern lithium, while twelve relate to nickel. Other projects are focusing on graphite, cobalt and manganese. It’s about mining, recycling and processing these raw materials - while adhering to high environmental standards.
With a 72.3% market share, lithium-ion batteries dominate grid scale BESS applications and are set to remain the top choice for future needs. Germany led the European BESS market in 2023, with a 34% share, followed by Italy at 22% and the UK at 15%.
