Pricing structure variables include changes to distribution price in line with the Electricity Authority’s distribution pricing principles, more cost reflective energy pricing, and a shift in energy prices by season that reflects greater energy scarcity in winter months.

Opportunities for solar PV and energy storage in New Zealand Due to New Zealand''s reliance on hydroelectric power plants, most of which are situated on the country''s southern island, dry years
The NZ Battery Project was set up in 2020 to explore possible renewable energy storage solutions for when our hydro lakes run low for long periods. A pumped hydro scheme at Lake Onslow was one of the options
This report builds on our previous report for Transpower, which assessed the potential value of distributed energy resources in New Zealand (Reeve, 2020). For this report, we have updated
Solar PV has swept South Africa''s Renewable Energy Independent Power Producers Programme (REIPPPP) bid window 7 (BW7) as this technology won the entire 1.76 GW awarded by the government to
Increasing access to government procurement Some businesses can find it difficult to bid for government procurement opportunities, so agencies must consider how they can create opportunities for Kiwi businesses around the
New Zealand''s electricity system remains heavily dependent on hydro generation, especially in the South Island, where facilities like Manapouri and Clyde dams dominate.

MFAT is in the ''awaiting approval'' stage of a Solar PV, Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) and electrical grid upgrade project in Niue. The current scope of the project includes the
Understanding the value of residential solar PV and storage in New Zealand New research analyses solar generation and demand data across regions under various price pathways,
This is the first study in New Zealand to use detailed and high-quality data for both solar supply and residential demand. It shows solar PV is likely to be financially viable for a significant proportion of New Zealand households, particularly for those who consume a lot of energy.
For sensitivity, we have used an assessment by (Watson, et al., 2016) that modelled a simulation of the low-voltage (LV) network to assess the impact of solar PV on the New Zealand LV system. This report found that 11.06% of the LV network currently experiences under-voltage.
A recent study on distributed battery energy storage systems in New Zealand shows that if such systems are appropriately configured, they can respond faster than current providers of instantaneous reserve, recovering frequency faster and stabilising the system with fewer oscillations (Transpower, 2019a). 49.8 Hz and 50.2 Hz.
It highlights one of the key economic benefits of solar PV with energy storage to New Zealand – as a replacement for peaking generation, and limiting the size of the transmission and distribution networks.
5 kW export limit and 15 kW export limit. It is interesting that the performance of solar PV with a battery is maintained or improved despite there being a 10% energy loss associated with the battery. Figure 36 also shows slightly higher performance with a complex time-of-use buyback price structure.
In the last section it was shown that time-of-use retail prices can, in some cases, improve the rate of return of solar PV with a battery compared to PV without a battery. However, the improvement is small and often occurs when there is a lower return for a system with a battery relative to one without.
