Projected Utility-Scale BESS Costs: Future cost projections for utility-scale BESS are based on a synthesis of cost projections for 4-hour duration systems as described by (Cole and Karmakar, 2023). The share of energy and power
Case Study on Cost Model of Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) Manufacturing Plant Objective: One of our clients has approached us to conduct a feasibility study for establishing a mid to large-scale Battery Energy Storage
Downward pricing will feed through to reduced levelised cost of storage (LCoS), with new BESS projects, due online in 2025 and the next few years able to capitalise on much cheaper batteries. However, older assets face
As the renewable energy sector rapidly evolves, battery energy storage systems (BESS) are emerging as a critical pillar for decarbonization. However, with capital constraints and rising market volatility, not all projects

BESS gains edge with declining costs It costs less compared to pumped-hydro storage and Compressed Air Energy Storage. Battery energy storage systems (BESS) are projected to be the most competitive power
Prices are expected to increase nominally in 2025, as shown in the chart above, before jumping more substantially in 2026. That larger increase is primarily down to new tariffs imposed by the US on battery products from
The Storage Futures Study (Augustine and Blair, 2021) describes how a greater share of this cost reduction comes from the battery pack cost component with fewer cost reductions in BOS,
This broadly matches up with recent analysis by BloombergNEF which found that BESS costs have fallen 2% in the last six months, as well as anecdotal evidence of reductions after spikes in 2022. Compared to 2022, the national laboratory says the BESS costs will fall 47%, 32% and 16% by 2030 in its low, mid and high cost projections, respectively.
The most important takeaway is that the NREL estimates that BESS costs will start to fall this year in its ‘low’ and ‘mid’ cost projections, with an increase over the next few years forecast in its ‘high’ scenario, visualised in the graph above.
The cost of BESS has fallen significantly over the past decade, with more precipitous drops in recent years: This is nearly a 70% reduction in three years, owing to falling battery pack prices (now as low as $60-70/kWh in China), increased deployment, and improved efficiency.
We’re going to see the locational benefits of BESS become more pronounced in 2025 and beyond. Batteries in the north of Scotland have been earning more than average as they have been doing so in the south-east of England as well, whereas BESS in the midlands and south-west of England have earned less than average, reveals Modo Energy’s analysis.
Several factors can influence the cost of a BESS, including: Larger systems cost more, but they often provide better value per kWh due to economies of scale. For instance, utility-scale projects benefit from bulk purchasing and reduced per-unit costs compared to residential installations. Costs can vary depending on where the system is installed.
A pivotal year ahead for BESS The Labour Government’s ambition to accelerate renewables buildout is clear, but 2025 must be a turning point for BESS. These systems have proven their value in maintaining grid stability, such as during interconnector failures with Norway and France in 2022 and 2024.
