The BESS market in Romania is heating up, say local analysts and insiders. Irene Mihai, policy officer at the Romanian Photovoltaic Industry Association (RPIA) recently told pv magazine that a realistic target for the utility-scale BESS segment in Romania “would be around 2 GWh (around 1 GW of installed capacity)” for 2030.
The project would be many times larger than the largest BESS online in Romania today, a 6MW/24MWh system from developer and independent power producer (IPP) Monsson (Premium access article).
With this reopened bidding, the ministry aims to see the two-hour duration battery energy storage system (BESS) facilities up and running by mid-2026. The budget for the BESS projects is EUR 79.6 million. The call includes funding for the purchase of equipment and its installation, as well as the construction of BESS assets.
