A total of 33 bids for the five battery energy storage system (BESS) projects at transmission system operator (TSO) Eskom substations were received, of which four bids from Mulilo and one from Scatec were successful.
As South Africa continues to grapple with frequent blackouts and load shedding, these BESS projects will help mitigate risks and contribute to the country’s energy security. The Gainfar Project will be connected to the Ngwedi substation, while the Boitekong Project will be connected to the Marang substation.
The five BESS projects, of 123MW or 124MW each with a 4-hour duration, will require a total investment of ZAR 9.5 billion (US$531 million), Ramokgopa said. Although Mulilo is backed by a European investor, its team is local and the Minister highlighted Mulilo’s success in this window as a positive development.
The three windows have cumulated 1,744 MW in output power across windows of 513MW, 615MW, and 616MW, each with a four-hour duration. Electricity and Energy Minister, Dr Kgosientsho Ramokgopa said in the announcement that the five BESS projects will require a total investment of ZAR 9.5 billion (US$530 million), with costs falling 40% from Window 1.
Bid Window 3 was issued in March 2024, calling for 616 MW of four-hour battery energy storage systems (BESS). Norway-based Scatec secured the Haru BESS project, a 123 MW/492 MWh installation at an estimated cost of R2,2 billion with about 80% allocated to engineering, procurement and construction.
DMRE has also extended the bid submission deadline for the second bid window of BESIPPPP, from 30 April 2024 to 6 June 2024, and done the same for the seventh bid window of the separate Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPPP). BESIPPPP round two will procure 615MW/2,460MWh.
