Our analysis shows that despite a well-structured mini-grid tariff system and subsidies initiatives in Tanzania, operating privately-owned mini-grid systems in rural communities is not financially feasible. Additionally, using an optimization technique, we assess the profitability of a mini-grid electrification project in Tanzania from a private investment perspective. We find that the approved standardized small power producers’ tariffs and subsidy scheme in Tanzania still do not allow mini-grid for rural electrification projects to be profitable.
However, most of the subsidies for mini-grid projects in Tanzania were implemented between 2008 and 2014 (Org et al., 2016 ). Even if we apply the subsidies that used to be in place (Marching Grant and Performance Grant), they will not be enough to make the project profitable.
